GCSE GEOGRAPHY COURSEWORK CROSS-UNIT TASK

An investigation into tourism in St Lucia

Your task is to produce the front page of a newspaper special for St. Lucia. The newspaper is covering some of the important issues facing St. Lucia today.  The stories and features you include must be carefully chosen to allow you to show how far you understand the economic and environmental problems and opportunities that are facing the country.

You will be using your research into St. Lucia and its environment to provide knowledge of the Caribbean Island, its relief and climate, its important ecosystems (eg: tropical rainforest and marine), its economy, population distribution and profile, major tourist sites and activities, current environmental issues and its future economic development and in particular the role that tourism may play in the future of St. Lucia.

St. Lucia has a problem with deforestation as farmers clear land to grow bananas which is producing some flooding.

It also has a problem with pollution of the sea by sewage created by tourists who put a considerable strain on the infra-structure of the island.(It has been calculated that tourists to the Caribbean use 1.6 times as much water and 27 times as much electricity as the locals).

It also has a high unemployment rate(15%) .It is important that you recognise and show in your articles that different groups of people may have different views about the issues.

Think about the farmers, the charcoal burners, the fishermen, the unemployed, old and young people, workers in the tourist industry, multi national tour companies and conservationists.

Here are some suggestions of what to include in your newspaper:

Features: these could include information about the rainforest, agriculture on St. Lucia, fishing and tourism. These should be informative pieces showing your knowledge of these subjects. Answer the questions: What? Where?  When?  Who?  Why?

Maps/ Photos/ diagrams: these could help explain the articles on your front page.

Interviews: these will give you an opportunity to express the views of different people about the issues.

Adverts: might allow you show what tourist activities are carried out on the island and the type of job opportunities are available.

A weather forecast: this will allow you to write about the climate of the St. Lucia

An Editorial: this will allow you to express your views about the issues.
