What you need to know about….

Little Rock, Arkansas, 1957.

Federal Troops enter Little Rock School

The expected confrontation over segregated schools came at Little Rock. There, 9 black pupils had been prevented from attending the all white Central High School. The Federal Government ordered the State Government to allow the children to enrol. He refused and was supported by many whites. Eisenhower sent in 1,000 National Guardsmen and 1,000 paratroopers to make sure the 9 black teenagers joined the school.

Elizabeth Eckford

Eisenhower’s decision showed the Federal Government meant business over desegregation. However, more success took time. By 1961, there were still no black children in white schools in the state of Alabama, Mississippi or Carolina. Furthermore, of the 2 million black school children in the south in 1960, only 2,600 went to integrated schools.

Key Words

Federal Government - the national government of the USA based in Washington, D.C. There have been some occasions where state governments and the Federal government have clashed over ideas and laws. Many in the South still resent rule from Washington.

Desegregation - removing segregation laws which separated people by race, colour or religion.

Integration - multicultural communities.
